More information:
My areas of interest and expertise have widened and deepened during 30 years of practice. I hold both a Ph.D. and a Psy.D. My overall belief is that the trust and emotional safety developed in the psychotherapeutic relationship is much of what helps each patient heal and to flourish. Initially, my approach is to have conversations with each patient whereby we determine together what the specific problems are, what might be reasonable treatment goals, and how we might proceed together with a treatment plan and approach that feels comfortable to us both. I am trained to do both short-term treatment as well as more in-depth, intensive psychoanalysis. My training is largely psychodynamic (recognizing how early life experiences can cause disturbing problems in our lives today). In my experience, troubling symptoms or issues are often the result of deep feelings that are either unknown and/or go unexpressed, and careful understanding of these feelings can often reduce pain in the here and now. In addition, I use specific techniques and recommend tools for productive living and stress management. For patients who are comfortable with it, I use a therapy dog in my sessions which often provides an immediate sense of warmth and relaxation. My background includes work as a School Psychologist, a Staff Psychologist for the Probation Department, an expert witness for Juvenile Court, Director of Psychological Services for a 20-Physician Medical Group, and Teacher and Supervisor of Psychology Interns. Realizing very early on the enormous body/mind connection, I also became Certified as a Yoga teacher. My continuing education focuses primarily on the latest research in all of my areas of interest, most particularly eating disorders, anxiety, depression, and holistic medicine.
