SBCPA Presents: Mental Health Beyond Borders: Culturally Responsive Mental Health Care for Latine/x Immigrant and Refugee Communities

Presenter: Joanna Servin, Ph.D.

Dr. Joanna Servin is a licensed bilingual (Spanish/English), bicultural clinical psychologist specializing in child and adolescent mental health. She has provided care across community mental health, schools, hospitals, and academic medical centers, with a focus on diverse and underserved populations, including Latino and immigrant communities.

Dr. Servin earned her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology with a specialty in Child and Family from Palo Alto University. She completed her predoctoral internship at the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center and postdoctoral fellowship at UC Davis Health, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. Her training includes Latine/x mental health, bilingual psychological assessment, and culturally informed, evidence-based treatment for youth with mood, trauma, psychosis, suicidality, and neurodevelopmental concerns. She is trained in CBT, DBT, TF-CBT, PCIT, and PC-CARE, including culturally responsive adaptations.

Course Outline:

1. Mental Health and Migration (40 minutes)

Migration experiences, immigration processes, and systemic barriers
Sociopolitical stressors and mental health considerations
Barriers to mental health care

2. Culture, Resilience, and Culturally Responsive Practice (45 minutes)
Cultural humility and culturally responsive practice
Latine/x cultural values, strengths, and resilience
Cultural conceptualizations of distress and healing
Working with mixed-status and intergenerational families
Bilingual/interpreter considerations
Building therapeutic engagement and trust
Clinical case examples

3. Trauma-Informed and Culturally Responsive Evidence-Based Interventions (55 minutes)

4. Legal and Ethical Considerations (50 minutes)
Confidentiality, informed consent, and documentation

5. Advocacy, Provider Burnout, and Sustainable Practice (40 minutes)

6. Q&A and Discussion (10 minutes)

Course Description:

Immigrant and refugee communities are navigating significant psychological stressors shaped by sociopolitical conditions, systemic barriers, displacement, and ongoing uncertainty. Mental health providers are often on the frontlines of care but may have limited training and institutional support to provide culturally responsive, trauma-informed, and systems-aware services. Providers may also experience significant stress and burnout while navigating complex systems and engaging in advocacy on behalf of the communities they serve.

This presentation will provide an overview of key cultural, ethical, and legal considerations for providing effective mental health services to Latine/x immigrants and refugees. Topics will include understanding unique mental health needs and barriers to care; ethical and legal responsibilities when working with undocumented individuals and asylum seekers; and practical strategies for adapting evidence-based interventions through a culturally responsive, trauma-informed lens. The presentation will also discuss provider burnout and sustainability in the current sociopolitical climate. Attendees will gain practical tools to strengthen clinical practice, engagement, and advocacy with immigrant and refugee communities.

Learning Objectives:

After attending this event, attendees will be able to:

1. Identify at least two psychological stressors and systemic barriers impacting immigrant and refugee children and families.

2. Describe at least two cultural values, protective factors, or sources of resilience among Latine/x immigrant and refugee communities.

3. Identify at least two key points of intervention for mental health providers working with immigrant and refugee children and families.

4. Describe at least two culturally responsive and trauma-informed adaptations to evidence-based mental health interventions for immigrant and refugee populations.

5. Identify at least two ethical and legal considerations when providing mental health services to undocumented and mixed-status families.

6. Identify at least two strategies for strengthening provider advocacy and promoting sustainable clinical practice when working with immigrant and refugee communities.

Please note: This event is offered at a rate of $115 for SBCPA members. Non-members are welcome to join this event at a rate of $150. Students, or participants who are not applying for CE credit, are welcome to join this event at a rate of $50.
