Opioids: What Psychologists Should Know

COURSE DESCRIPTION

In this salon, Dr. Meyerovich will identify what defines the opioid class of drugs (and what are common names), and how they affect the brain and the body. He will review the criteria for appropriate prescriptions for opioids. He will review the signs and symptoms of opioid addiction. He will explore when might a psychologist make a referral for opioid addiction and to where can one make such referrals in the Santa Barbara community. Dr. Meyerovich will also identify the action of Naloxone and its effectiveness for opioid overdose. He will identify what he perceives are the pros and cons of the 2015 CA law that provides access to Naloxone without a prescription.


COURSE OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this class, participants will be able to:

1. Identify common names of opioid drugs. 

2. List signs and symptoms of opioid addiction. 

3. Identify opioid addiction referral options in the Santa Barbara community.
