According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) are a group of conditions that can occur in a person whose mother drank alcohol during pregnancy. This may include problems with physical development, behavior and learning. This continuing education salon will present research-based information regarding FASD and its incidence, symptoms and neurological and behavioral effects. Dr. Gottheil will discuss concrete and practical strategies designed to manage the disorders in school and home settings. She will also discuss Mattson’s research regarding a cognitive and behavioral phenotype of FASD, as well as assessment techniques using neurocognitive testing.
Goals and Objectives:
1) Participants will be able to describe the incidence and symptoms of FASD.
2) Participants will learn about appropriate tests to identify and differentiate
individuals with prenatal effects of alcohol.
3) Participants will become informed about outcome research on the prenatal
effects of alcohol and interventions to manage them, as well as how to access
sources of information for future reference on those topics
4) Participants will learn about specific cognitive behavioral strategies that are
considered best practice with this population.
